Agents that Raise Blood Pressure Caffeine, smoking, vigorous exercise, anxiety, or running late for a doctor's appointment can all increase blood pressure. If in doubt, retake the blood pressure at the end of the encounter to ensure these factors are minimized. Bell or Diaphragm? Even though the Korotkoff sounds are low frequency and should be heard better with the bell, it is often difficult to apply the bell properly in the anticubital fold. For this reason, it is common practice to use the diaphragm when taking blood pressure. Pressure Differences If there is more than 10 mmHg difference between the two arms, make a note to always use the reading from the arm with the higher pressure. Large differences between the arms may be a sign of aortic dissection or coarctation of the aorta. In this case, the lower extremity blood pressures should also be obtained. |
